ECOTS specially designed a bioenergy plant for Twin Birch Dairy in Skaneateles, NY that uses Capstone Microturbines to generate the electricity for the farm. The generating system incorporates ECOTS proprietary technology that dehydrates the biogas and conditions it for burning in the microturbines. The actual bioenergy plant was built in collaboration with Capstone, the compressor company and others.
Working with Niagara-Mohawk Electric Company, and New York State Energy Research and Development Agency, the dairy farmer built the digester.
The digester was not constructed properly and the biogas leaked from it. Meantime, Niagara Mohawk, who was the sponsor of the project merged with another utility and was not able to help the farmer correct the problems. ECOTS stepped in voluntarily to support the farmer and to help with the corrective actions required to get the digester operational.
After a lot of effort by the farmer and ECOTS, the digester is now functioning and the bioenergy plant is operational.
The Twin Birch project is an excellent example of why it is important to have a qualified partner working with you when you are constructing a bioenergy or manure management facility. ECOTS helps its partners avoid construction and design problems by coordinating all activities from concept to construction while integrating its partner's business needs.
