Through the leadership of ECOTS, the Bioenergy Cooperative of Perry was formed in October, 2003 to help the dairy farmers in the Perry area comply with the EPA CAFO requirements. This community owned and operated cooperative is the first of its kind, and demonstrates how collaboration can not only provide economic benefit, but also address environmental problems.
A recently completed economic feasibility study identified that the community digester will provide a number of benefits to the farmers and communities surrounding Perry. The obvious include EPA compliance, better drinking water, less odor, community jobs and new business opportunities.
The Cooperative plans to begin construction on the digester in late 2004. The design will include a bioenergy plant that both generates electricity, as well as produces pipeline quality natural gas for resale. The digester will process manure from at least 3,000 cows and will be a hybrid Plug Flow design.
ECOTS is excited about this first of its kind project, and believes this cooperative will be the model for future bioenergy and manure management projects.
