The H Power fuel cell program was the first in the nation to demonstrate fuel cells at customer homes and businesses. The demonstration program was designed to capture technology improvements that would enhance the fuel cells' ability to modulate power output as the electric load in the house changed. Running on both propane and natural gas the test units evolved through three generations before H Power merged with a competitor. ECOTS' support to H Power proved to be instrumental in H Power attracting the interest of a major public company that acquired it under favorable terms.
The H Power fuel cell demonstrations were the first of ECOTS' technology development and demonstration success stories. Eighteen units were installed throughout the U.S. at various elevations and customer environments. Several were tested by the Department of Defense in California and Maryland. ECOTS ability to work closely with the end-users insured H Power captured both technical and user input at each installation location.
